refers to websites and apps that are designed to allow people to share content quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. The ability to share photos, opinions, or events has transformed the way we communicate to others as well as conducting business.


Social Media Apps are one of the most of used technologies and yet there may be elements we have not explore or used because we simply learn the basics of an app on the fly. The seven apps above are the most popular and most used around the world. A big job for parents is managing technology with your little ones as well as teens. There are so many digital threats to our children (all ages) today. How to keep them safe can be challenging as the threat to bullying, stalking, and harassment is vast. The apps themselves are not dangerous, so it is our job to help our children understand that there are online users who want to harm them. From an early age, we need to keep their identity safe as well as educate and guide them about Internet safety. This may well mean purchasing appropriate software to help.


Let's get an arial view of the top seven Social Media apps. Over 3.5 Billion people worldwide use some type of Social Media today to network with friends, family, and colleagues.

  • Instagram - most popular with teens and young adults using photos and videos

  • YouTube - the second most popular search engine behind Google. It hosts popular instructional video tutorials, product review, music and more. A huge 73% of adults use YouTube with the largest range between 15 and 34 year olds.

  • Facebook - The largest social media site in the world. 68% of US Adults are on FB sharing engaging videos and photos is most popular.

  • Twitter - People on Twitter are active numerous time a day. Users are a more tech-savvy group of people to respond to breaking news, and snippets of content with videos and images.

  • TikTok - This social media has only been around several years. Created in China, It has been reported to have over 800 million monthly users. 50% of users are under the age of 35 with the most concentrated group being the ages of 16-24. The content released is comedic, often posting non-sensical short videos.

  • Pinterest - This app is for saving ideas, finding recipes and DYI projects, hairstyles and more. It has 320 million monthly users who are mostly adult females.

  • Snapchat - This app is the most heavily used app for those under the age of 25. Users provide updates with friends and family via video storytelling and disappearing images.

In the next four blog posts, I will cover four of these seven apps. Most adults are aware of Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest so we will take a look at the remaining four Social Media apps.
